Red fish w ith yellow strips

Where Found: Larger adults found offshore in deeper water. Rapid growing species, reaching 4 to 5 feet in a single year; swims at speeds up to 50 knots Feeding Habits: feeds on the surface or at mid-depths, on ballyhoo, flying fish, smaller pelagic fishes and squid. They often have small light-colored spots on the belly. The average size of these fish is 4 to 8 pounds. Flounder have a rounded flat body that is brown on one side and white on the other side. Remarks: Matures by 9 to 10 inches; spawns OFFSHORE from January through August; young form schools associated with floating objects, and have been observed living inside the bell of jellyfish; adults feed on fish, shrimp, and squid. Spawns April to September; females maturing at 3 to 4 years of age; grows slowly; attains a weight of 6 pounds and length of 24 inches; feeds on small, swimming crustaceans and mollusks.

Remarks: tolerates a wide range of salinities; schools corner a school of baitfish at the surface and feed with commotion that can be seen at great distances; feeds mainly on small fish; peak spawning occurs OFFSHORE from March through September. Florida Record: 44 lbs. Description: greenish gray on back, shading to silvery sides; fish in dark waters showing gold on throat, pelvic, and anal fins; deep flattened body with small mouth; no scutes; 22 to 27 soft dorsal rays; 20 to 23 soft anal rays; origin of anal fin slightly behind origin of second dorsal.
